Carrots

Carrot is a root vegetable, usually orange in color, though purple, red, white, and yellow varieties exist. Available all year round but at their best mid May through  the end of September. In spring – they’re particularly tender and sweet, later in the season will be larger and tougher. Some argue that, of all vegetables, carrots that are grown organically have the most marked improvement of flavor.

Carrots are useful companion plants for gardeners. There is evidence that growing between tomato plants increases tomato production. Carrots mature within four months, so it is best to plant in early February to July. They grow best in full sun but tolerate some shade.

Carrot seeds are very tiny, so when you are planting them in the ground, mix them with some sand, so it will be easier to plant them and should be sown about 2 cm deep. The soil should be loose, preferably with sand. If you’ll start sowing in the last week of April of early maturing varieties, from April 25 to May 5

Carrots will grow in a crowd and need to be thinned to make room. If you are planning to store carrots for the winter, plant them around June 10-15. If the soil has lots of moisture the roots will rot and in dry ground carrots will be too dry. At first they should be watered well, and when the first green shoots appear, reduce watering to twice a week.

It is best to choose those areas in which last year grew cucumbers, tomatoes, garlic, onions, cabbage, potatoes and greens (except lettuce).
