Cinco de Mayo
Some people think that Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexican Independence Day (16 September), but it is not, Cinco de Mayo is a national holiday in Mexico to celebrate the victory of Mexican forces over the French army at the Battle of Puebla, May 5, 1862.
It’s interesting, but the holiday is celebrated more in the United States, especially in the south- western regions: California, Arizona, San Jose, San Francisco, Texas, New Mexico, as well as Chicago, areas with a high Mexican-American populations. Cinco de Mayo is widely interpreted as a celebration of Mexican culture, of food, music.
In Mexico, it is not a federal, but an official holiday in the state of Puebla, where the battle was fought. On this day in Mexico and in America people have big parties, festivals, parades and costume carnivals with various Mexican dishes and drinks, ethnic music and dance. This holiday is bright, colorful and cheerful, a festival of Mexican pride and heritage!
